'Greater Bargoed' comprises Bargoed, Aberbargoed and Gilfach with a combined population of approximately 12,000. The area has a proud mining heritage. In recent years, much of the area has seen quite radical land reclamation and landscaping further to the demise of the coal industry. For the purposes of the IWN, the nearby village of Deri in the lower part of the Darran Valley has been included in the area.
Bargoed town centre, which has an interesting mix of shops and cafes, has some notable buildings including the library (a former chapel) and the former Police Court (now the Town Council headquarters).
